"Do note that there's a big difference between orthoscopic "keyhole" surgery to "clean up" the joint and total knee replacement (with a few other variations in-between).  Total knee replacement is fairly major…"

"I had the keyhole, or "Scope", last November.  The knee feels perhaps "tighter", but did not help with the leg pain that is more than likely caused by PPS.  No MD here.  But, it seems that your knee might benefit…"

"Toni, I had the knee in my good leg replaced 20 years ago. It was 44 years after I had the polio at age 13. I had had arthoscopic surgery on the knee four years prior, but it didn't last. My doctor said that when I was adjusting the way I lived…"

Knee Surgery - yes or no ?

Hello to anyone who is reading this ...... I have just found this website and my question to other members is have any of you had surgery to your knee not due to the polio but for wear and tear? I wont bore you with the long protracted story but 2 years on since visiting my GP with excrutiating pain in my knee they have discovered (via my request for an MRI scan) that the cartlidge is worn away on the left side of my left knee, there is swelling and a possible fracture. I saw the head poncho…See More

Are you a Polio Survivor?
yes
What year did you contract polio?
1957
Do you have Post-Polio Syndrome?
dont think so
List any assistive devices you are using...
crutches, power chair, mobility scooter and hand controls to drive
Please describe how polio has changed your life.
I had a very secure happy childhood at home but a miserable childhood outside.
However, the rest of my life has been very rewarding and happy.
Slowed down a bit in my 30's.
Pain in arms in 40's plus a fall breaking by right knee
Now in my 50's terrible excrutiating pain in my left knee, long protracted story but upshot is I am not convinced that surgery is the best option. Would prefer to find a surgeon who has had experience of operating on a patient with polio.

Yesterday, our Miami Post Polio Support group (Post Polio Assn. of South Florida) met at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and enjoyed the second of four seminars that the new Director of our PPS Clinic., Dr. Tamar Ference offered to host for polio survivors.

Dr. Ference had a PPS Clinic in Baltimore, Maryland for 10 years before coming to Miami two years ago.

I have talked to many polio survivors who have had an appointment with her and are so pleased, as she is so caring and really “thinks out-of-the-box” to come up with methods of treatment to better your quality of life.

A Miami orthotist and two physical therapists, who have been working with this PPS clinic for about 15 years, are included in her team preliminary evaluation.

One of Dr. Ference’s patients told us about a combination shot of cortisone and a gel (the cortisone alleviates pain and the gel is a lubricant that keeps the bones from touching each other) to her knee which had her walking with no pain the very next day.

Another patient said she had had the same shot last August and still has no pain and can walk short distances easily.
