Polio caught me on October 5th 1952 when I was ten. The teacher sent me home in disgrace for being a sook (wimp) because I was crying. As I got to the back door of our house I fainted(?) on the ground. Sometime later I woke briefly and saw that people were wheeling me along a wide corridor and streams of children were being wheeled toward me. It was a very sureal experience. My mother later told me that the huge room was being emptied of other children so that they wouldn't be distressed by me… Continue

Twice in a single day! Maybe I'm getting the hang of it.

Sorry for not responding to you much sooner but I had not figure out how to do it, where to respond, and could not even find your first message again after reading it the first time. Maybe I've liked it for now (if I can just remember the next time).

Hi Stella:

Thanks for your kind word about my site. There's an article on my site called "The Canadian Polio Experience: A Personal Journey Through The Past," which gives the background to how I got involved with polio and studying its history. You can blame Neil Young for getting me started. The article is near the top of one of the PolioHistory pages,

Take care,

Hi Stella,

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you. I logged on once before to message you back but could not figure out how to if to message you back privately or on your main page. Anyhow, it looks like I'm responding on your comment wall, which I presume is okay.

I was wondering if it would be okay to use your first name in my research. I would like to say that people in other countries have also noticed a difference in Catholic and Protestant responses and I would like to reference you. Would that be okay? My email is gbodsworth@gmail.com I can send you a contract to type-sign if you like.
Thanks,

Ginny

Thank you for your welcome. Going back into my history to get the facts was not easy. The result was that I made peace with my polio experience and finally feel free. I look forward to speaking with others who had polio at age 2-3 who were taken from their parents and placed in isolation. I wonder if their life experiences were similar to mine. I continually appreciate each and ever story related by polio survivors. Thanks for sharing.

I replied to you but it ended up being on my page. I replied to myself! I continue to learn that formats are different. Getting comfortable with all the new networking options via computer.

Stella,
Thank you for welcoming me to the group (12/11/09). Sorry it's been so long for my reply. I'm semi-retired so the little time I've had on the web has been spent watching the videos and trying to learn to navigate the site. It feels strange seeing the subject I've lived with for so many years discussed so openly. I hope I will be able to contribute.

Hi, Stella
I guess it manifests itself in many ways, but for me it is deep, agonizing muscle and ligament pain that is so debilitating that it is not easily withstood. The only thing that seems to help is rest, and that is rarely cumulative. My partner has post-polio, and many of his symptoms reflect mine.

Hello Stella........you sound like a star!!!!!! Thank you for your welcome...my first!! I found this site on the British Polio on-line forum... liked the look of it, and decided to join. When I have found my way around, I hope to contribute. It's helpful to know there are others out there who are experiencing problems similar to your own and that you are not alone. Have a great Christmas and a healthy and happy 2010.
