Please describe how polio has changed your life.
Post Polio onset, in 1951 at birth I had the Birth Defect entitled " Spina-Bifida". Which dealt me a multitude of relative neurological problems. Walking gait issues, bladder and bowel control issues. Knowing that I had a confirmed case of Polio in 1956/1957 verified through spinal tap at LAC USC Medical Center in Los Angeles. Then given infused dosages of the serum, I regained the use of my legs which was lost at initial onset. In the past 10 years dealing with post Spina-Bifida, neurological troubles, after a tethered cord surgical release, in 2000
I have experienced an onslaught of additional issues, to which I originally thought were related to the Birth Defect as opposed to the Post-Polio Syndrome. While undergoing a continual barrage of treatments, shots, and a never ending of oral pain medication usage, while dealing with the specific Pain issue, other unrelated troubles became more and more prevelant. These issues have been confirmed through Medical Procedures to be that of many of the issues related to Post Polio Syndrome.ie; Muscle pain on right lower extremeity, breathing issues, swallowing, edema, deformation of the right foot, shorter right leg, Neurogenic Bladder Disease,
EMG verification of muscle weakness, damage, right lower, short term memory issues with difficulty in word association, concentration, attention disability, etc.
Today I am on SSI-Disability, spending most days in bed up to 18 to 20 hours, rarely get out and about, and most recently have began to have trouble driving due to discomfort and pain. I have been forced to give up my Ministry for much of the same reasons. My ever-present constant drive is to search for solutions to provide me the ability to return to a more functional basis. In addition to my Ministry, I have degrees in Psychology, and Mechanical Engineering. My ability to continue on the daily quest is to my ever present never ending spiritual convictions and my faith.
