Please describe how polio has changed your life.
I was treated of polio at 5 years old. I was the only survivor of a terrible epidemic in 1952. I lost the use of my legs, but when I left the hospital in Chile at the age of 6, I told my mother I would become a medical professional. After many challenges and surgeries, I graduated with honors at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Chile and migrated to California, where I obtained a specialty in Citotechnology and graduated from the University of Southern California in 1981. Polio made me understand that a disability is something that can destroy us or make us stronger. In my case, I decided I would not let it stop me in my professional goals. I worked at the Central Laboratory of Kaiser Permanente for 28 years, diagnosing cancer. I have been self-sufficient all this time, until the post-polio finally left me attached to permanent care 24-7 and equipment that helps me to breathe. In 2015 I self-published my memoirs and I give lectures at churches and community centers. Polio is affecting my body, but it has provided strength to my spirit.
