Please describe how polio has changed your life.
I never knew I had dealt with polio. My parents never directly explained the circumstances surrounding my sickness at the age of 3 in the late spring or early summer of 1955. I had to be seen by an orthopedist in 2014 after a knee collapsed. He had a career which began in the late 60s or early 70s. He posed the possibility and the neurologist to whom I was referred confirmed the suspicion with testing and an EMG.
I have since been fitted with bi-lateral KAFOs to prevent hyperextension to lock my knees for standing and provide lateral stability. Long term knee pain was reduced but other general pain and weakness in other body parts are a constant companion. The diagnosis revealed answers to odd memorable comments by my parents and some strange situations I remember from early childhood. My neurologist stated many parents did their best to keep polio a secret if at all possible due to the stigma attached.
