Polio Survivors of Marin; Post-Polio Health International
Please describe how polio has changed your life.
Polio drastically limited my physical ability. I have had severe paralysis in one foot, ankle and calf since 1951. There are many activities that appealed to me in which I would have loved to participate, but like many polio survivors, I tried to do everything possible, especially as a youth. Today I am more responsible and careful about expending energy, as PPS fatigue dominates. I have written a book, Not a Poster Child, which I am working on getting edited and published, about my experience of polio, how it affected my entire life, and how I manage now that I am in my elder years. I feel it is relevant to all handicapped persons and their families and caregivers. I also have a companion booklet I've composed, "Advice from the Wild Handicapper," about travel, attitudes for caregiving and assistance, and how to use assistive devices and take care of oneself.
