Please describe how polio has changed your life.
I overcame polio. Post Polio has rocked my world weakness, cold intolerance, muscular and skeletal pain. I owned Middlebrooks Relocation United Van Lines until selling in late 2004. I started my company in 1978 and built it into one of the southeast premier companies. In 1995 Dr. Anne Gawne of the Roosevelt Institute informed me of the lifestyle change I needed to make to maintain my strength and manage my pain but I would not listen. By the time I sold my company I could barely function. How could someone with mild polio and full recovery years later get hit harder from PPS than the initial infection? My type A just wouldn't let me listen. I had just received great news I did not have ALS but just late effects of polio. I mean really how bad could it get. WOW at 53 years of age I can barely walk now and the pain is constant and often unbearable. I grind my teeth from pain. When I get fatigued my brain short circuits often making the smallest discussion stress's me to the point of tears. I had built businesses, served on several boards from member through chairman. I spent my life thriving on and off of pressure and now I just can't function. It seemed as if I woke up one day and was just plain lazy. Yes I was really beating myself up by this point. I lost my ability to function as a leader and my self worth. With the support of the wonderful people who are living the same life I slowly eased up on myself and accept my life God has chosen for me. I have so much to write and say but will need to do it in stages. I was also a founder of junior and inter city golf with The PGA of America but now can barely swing a club. Together we will all rediscover ourselves within our limitations. I look forward to chatting with friends here old and new. How can we better serve each other? This is a very good start!!

Last November, an unusual polio outbreak occurred in The Congo Republic. A “wild” (naturally-occurring) Type I poliovirus, imported from Angola, has paralyzed at least 409 and killed 170. What is unusual is that those affected are not children under five but adults 15 to 29 and that 41% have died, versus the norm of… Continue

Hi Dan, I enjoyed looking at your family photos.  Aren't grandchildren wonderful? I have 11 grandchildren: 7 girls & 4 boys. My husband and I had all sons, grown men now. It's so nice to visit with Polio Today friends and realize that we are not alone. Pain is one of the things we have in common.  But what I enjoy is our collective spirit. Pain aside, we can do it.

Do you know of any medication or dietary supplement that will help lessen the effects of Post-Polio?

Dan,
thanks very much for the update. If you can provide me with a link or hardcopy when the story runs, I'd really appreciate it! Also, to update you, we are very close to providing PolioToday.org hats, mugs, t-shirts and bumper stickers on the site. Liz and I hope to make it available within the next month or so.

Thanks for joining the HVL PPS group. I'm sorry PPS has progressed so much for you. For myself, it's a little here, a little there, always aggravating, sometimes devastating, never consistent. You've got a great attitude and I hope you spread some of it our way. Be well. Gail
