Please describe how polio has changed your life.
At eleven, polio caused a major adjustment to my lifestyle. Right leg was paralyzed below the knee, slightly paralyzed above the knee. Thank's to The March of Dimes I was able to spend seven months at Hyde Home, Bath, Maine for rehab. Until PPS started in 1988, had a limp, couldn't run but lived a fairly normal life. However, this changed after reading an article published by Mayo Clinic/Sister Kenny Institute in 1989 when I discovered reasons for sudden tripping, falling and was easier to go upstairs leading with the strong leg, dragging the weak right leg. Following published testing results at Mayo, I started lap swimming to increase blood flow through aerobic exercising. This increased oxygen supply to the dying anterior horn cells. I chose swimming because it was the least trauma to the affected leg. In addition to many other health benefits, swimming had a positive effect in the control of PPS.
